Eight related substances (tocopherols and tocotrienols) are collectovelly called Vitamin E
They are all fat soluble and highly antioxidant. The most studied form of is alpha-tocopherol which has the highest bioavailability. Other forms are less studied and there is no agreement on their function. Some studies suggest that the other forms have no antioxidant properties. With more research, there is increasing emphasis on supplementing with mixed tocopherols. Today many people may be deficient in this vitamine. People have persuaded that a low fat diet is desirable and, as a result, are not getting the vitamin from healthy oils and nuts. The USDA recommends a maximum dosage of 1,000 mg per day. Vitamin E is also used as a topical treatment to prevent skin damage from exposure to the sun.
